Step 4 Inventory Sheets

Posted on December 22, 2025December 22, 2025 By ODAAT

These sheets were devised from the Joe and Charlie Big Book Studies circa late 1990s. The first three columns are the same ones in the Big Book, listed in Chapter 5.

The fourth column refers to the instruction: “Referring to our list again. Putting out of our minds the wrongs others had done, we resolutely looked for our own mistakes.” This also feeds nicely in to a Step 8 and 9 amends list – “We have a list of all persons we have harmed and to whom we are willing to make amends. We made it when we took inventory.“

The 5th column refers to the following sentence in Chapter 5: “Where had we been selfish, dishonest, self-seeking and frightened?“

It is recommended by Joe and Charlie:

  • When writing, go down each column one at a time until you get to the end, then start the next column.
  • When reading, (during Step 5,) read left to right,.one entry at a time.

The four areas covered by the big book are covered here:

  • Resentments – Resentments Word file
  • Fears – Fears Word file
  • Sex conduct – Sex Conduct Word file
  • Harms – Harms Word file

As far as I know, it makes no difference whether Step 5 is done in stages (one sheet at a time) or all in one go.
